Reiki Fellowship member Dorise Wurst, RN response to Bishop's letter | June 15, 2009
Dear CEO,
I am writing to bring your attention to the decision that was made several months ago by the Catholic Church Bishop William Lori, who has deemed Reiki "Inappropriate for Catholic Institutions”. Please see the letter here: http://www.usccb.org/comm/archives/2009/09-067.shtml
While the religious mission behind many health care institutions within the Catholic health care system supports the care and well being of patients, it is our position that it is ultimately up to doctors, not the Clergy, to determine what kinds of treatments are available to patients.
The report cites that Reiki is not accepted in the scientific and medical community and lacks scientific credibility. However, there are increasing number of scientific studies that are proving that Reiki can facilitate healing and relieve tension and stress associated with illness and disease. (http://www.reikifellowship.com/reikiresearch.html). Several other points to consider are that:
- The presence of Reiki programs in hospitals all occurs with very little overhead expenses or incurring liability on the part of the hospital.
- Furthermore, Reiki, is a treatment modality that is billable by nurses who practice Reiki. They use the diagnostic code 1.8 - Energy Field Disturbance. The diagnostic code may only be used by nurses and is recognized by the North American Nursing Diagnosis Association.
I am urging your organization to review the research, interview Reiki practitioners and patients in your facility and to due diligence in this area to determine its viability. Once this is done you may wish to speak out against the decision to remove voluntary Reiki programs from Catholic-funded hospitals and care centers, and reinstate this valuable healing modality. Thank you for your time.
Respectfully,
|
